Making Your Demo Stand Out - Editorial

Going hand in hand with last month’s advice on how to create the perfect vocal demo to attach with your profile, this month, we’re offering you advice on how to make the written part of your profile, just as eye-catching. The important thing about your written profile, is that a large majority of the time, it will be the thing that will intrigue an employer to the point where they’ll listen to your vocal demo, which could seal the deal and get you the job.

Obviously when you’ve only got a few lines to make an impression on an employer, you’ll need to make every word count. Conciseness is the key, if an employer has to go through a large number of profiles, they will want to read the key information and then move on. So make sure that the few lines you have, are packed full of the information that they need to know about.

The bottom line is that people are here to know about your voice, not you as a person. By all means mention how you are a hard worker, and will get them the results they want, but that’s not as important as describing your voice. Everyone can say that they’re a hard worker, but it’s your voice that will set you apart. With your written profile, make sure that you start out by describing your voice. Give the employer an idea of your tone and your range; accents are important as it shows you to be versatile, however only list the accents you can perform strongly. If you have a history working in voiceover and have completed any jobs that you are particularly proud of, put those in at the end, however whilst experience is a plus, your voice is what people are looking for, and if you don’t have the voice they are looking for they won’t be interested.

The written description attached to your profile can genuinely be a strong tool, one that can grab the employer’s attention and get them focused on you. It’s a must if you’re going to get work in the UK Voices jobzone, so when you are writing the profile, take your time over it, make sure you’ve got the important information listed, and above all else, you’re happy with the final product.
