Finding Your Voice: A Complete Voice Training Manual for Actors – Barbara Houseman

Over the previous months of UK Voices newsletters, we’ve always strived to bring you brilliant voice-over related products that we feel would help you along in your quest for voice-over stardom. This month we’re bringing you something a little less practical, and a little more theoretical, but it can still be a huge help none-the-less, and we’re also giving you a chance to win a copy at the end of this article.

Barbara Houseman has plenty of experience in vocal work. She has worked with the Royal Court, Royal Shakespeare Country and worked with a number of actors and directors, coaching them in voice-work. Whilst maybe one day you’ll be lucky enough to work with Barbara, you can at least now take advantage of some of her pearls of wisdom in her voice-over training guide. We read the book and we have to say. It’s definitely filled with a lot of good advice. The book opens with a very helpful section on how best to warm up and train your voice, which you could use in conjunction with our article in the newsletter. There is also a good section on how best to use the book to your advantage. At first this seemed like a silly idea as, it’s a book, how else do you use it apart from just reading it? As it turns out, there are a number of different ways that you can use the book and work through it, all of which will give you a different perspective on it.

The book has a number of sections, each of which starts out with exercises to do to boost your voice. Each section also comes with a number of illustrations which help to better explain the techniques and points that the author is making. The sections cover all aspects of voice-over work, ranging from articulation, to resonance all the way through to how to breathe properly. This book really does give you all the tips that you’d need to really improve your voice-over work. The book also ends with an appendix (helpful to clarify all the voice-over jargon used), as well as a great trouble-shooter section, which will hopefully answer any outstanding questions that you may have.

So we would highly recommend this book for all voice-over artists. It’s easy to read, and really well laid-out, making everything in the book explained clearly and easy to understand. UK Voices would like to help one lucky member with this, by giving you a FREE copy of the book. Anyone can enter. All you have to do is e-mail info@ukvoices.co.uk with the answers to this month’s newsletter trivia questions, and you’ll be in with a chance of winning a free copy of this amazing book!
